Why Should You Get the Google Nest Temperature Sensor for Your Home
When you build a new home every room has its own temperature. Each room has its own temperature that depends on its location in the house, the number of windows it has, its size, and the amount of sunlight it gets. You may have a thermostat in a room where you hardly ever spend time. However, with the Google Nest Temperature Sensor, you pick where your thermostat is going to measure the temperature to ensure your and your family’s comfort. It looks elegant and is easy to use. But is it worth buying? Let’s dig into the workings of the Google Nest Temperature Sensor.
What is the Difference Between the Nest Thermostat And Nest Temperature Sensor?
Since the Google Nest Thermostat already comes with a built-in temperature sensor, so you may be wondering why you need a Google Nest Temperature Sensor separately. While thermostats do provide the comfort we are looking for, they are not always situated at the best place in your home. They may be installed inside a wardrobe or a windy pathway in the house. In the case of multi-story houses, the temperature of only one floor may be recorded. A temperature sensor would be ideal in such a scenario, especially if there are children or older people in the family, who may require very specific temperature settings that they are comfortable with. If you think that your smart thermostat is not placed in a good location, you can go for the Google Nest Temperature Sensor and install it at a better location so it accurately measures the temperature. This sensor will then be forwarded to your heating or cooling system which will adjust the temperatures accordingly.
However, a common misconception is that you need the Google Nest Temperature Sensor for your smart thermostat to work. That is not true. The smart thermostat comes with a built-in temperature sensor with energy-saving features. In case, the smart thermostat is not installed in the right place, you may need to buy the temperature sensor for better efficacy. Conversely, you need the smart thermostat for your Google Nest Temperature Sensor to work efficiently. It works with the Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd generation, and the Nest Thermostat E.
Features of the Nest Temperature Sensor
Since the temperature sensor is battery operated, the installation does not involve any special wires or outlets. A regular lithium CR2 battery is usually required and comes with the Nest Temperature Sensor. The batteries can be changed by inserting a coin in the slot at the back and unscrewing the back cover. However, you will not need to replace the battery very often as they work fine for up to 2 years. When the battery is running low you will get notifications on your phone app. You will get two warnings before the temperature sensor stops working in which case it will be shown offline in the Nest App.
The thermostat connects to the Nest Temperature Sensor via Bluetooth and has a range of approximately 15m. This range is ideal for many homes. If your Nest Temperature Sensor and Thermostat are compatible, then your Google Nest Temperature Sensor will work with the same system as your thermostat works with. So just make sure they are compatible. Each thermostat is capable of working with 6 Nest Temperature Sensors. The thermostat will work the same way it was working before except that it will now take readings from the newly installed sensor. You can choose the temperature sensor to use with each thermostat in your app. The temperature sensor will tell the smart thermostat the temperature and location of the room. The smart thermostat will ignore the built-in temperature sensor’s information when you have installed a temperature sensor separately.
In the Nest app, you can see the temperatures recorded by all the nest temperature sensors. The comparisons between the temperatures recorded in the temperature sensor and the Nest Thermostat are also mentioned. This will allow you to see if the sensor is warmer or colder than the Nest Thermostat.
While the Nest Temperature Sensor does not directly save energy like the Nest Thermostat, you can place it in a way that may help in saving energy. Its primary feature is to keep you comfortable. You can install it in a well-insulated room and save energy and you can install it in a room with temperature fluctuations that is well-ventilated to increase energy losses.
The Nest Thermostat can be scheduled to use a different sensor at different times of the day. You can select the temperature sensor to be used during the morning, afternoon, evening, and night. Usually, the bedroom sensors are chosen to work during the day and night and not the evening or afternoon.
The Nest Temperature Sensor will keep working even when you do not have Wi-Fi, however, it will lose its connection with the app. The sensor and thermostat are connected via Bluetooth. In case you lose your Wi-Fi connection you can change the temperature using the ring in the thermostat. If for some reason the temperature sensor fails to record the temperatures and does not forward it to the thermostat for a maximum of 10 minutes, the thermostat will switch to recording temperatures from its built-in temperature sensor.
